The Battle Between Doing and Dwelling

Oct 4, 2026  •  Pastor Duke Edwards

What if the very thing holding us back from a deeper relationship with God is the version of ourselves we keep presenting to the world? This message digs into the tension between doing and dwelling -- between performing for approval and simply resting in who God says we are. Using the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman at the well, found in John 4, we explore what happens when someone comes face to face with a God who already knows every hidden chapter of their story. The woman arrives at the well at noon, alone, avoiding the crowd -- and in that quiet, unexpected moment, everything changes. Jesus does not offer her a polished version of grace. He meets her exactly where she is, in the middle of her mess, and offers something no bucket or rope can retrieve: living water that never runs out. The spiritual insight here is profound -- we cannot receive what God is offering if we are too busy defending what we already have. When we cling to our gifts, our achievements, or even our shame as our identity, we miss the invitation to something far greater. This message calls us to stop comparing our worst moments to everyone else's highlight reel, and instead turn toward the only one who sees us fully and loves us completely.
